1997 CANADIAN PARAGLIDING XC NOTES

Top of the list for ‘97 is Bob Gardner. After missing a year due to injury, Bob had his first XC flight from Golden to Brisco in June. By the end of the season he had +100km flights and topped the list with 292km. Canadian Champion, Hugo Tschurtschenthaler was second.

Guy Leblanc a Canadian Armed Forces helicopter pilots had the first 100 mile flight on a paraglider in Canada. In May, his wife Laurence towed him up near Cold Lake, AB. The flight [written up in Air Magazine] was a zigzag course around military airspace, truly an amazing feat

Senko Koyama from Japan became the first female paraglider pilot to fly over 100km in Canada. Senko spent over a month in Golden. When she arrived she had yet to have an XC flight.

Gary Nesbit, Ron Ford, & Garth Henderson all recorded their first + 100km flights in Golden this year. Bernard Winkelmann flew 100km off tow from Bieseker, Alberta. He later flew over 100km in competition in Spain & the US. Willi Muller rounded out the list of pilots over the 100km. .
